The village of Glen (Glenineeny - Gleann an Aonaigh) is located at the eastern end of Glen Lough under the shade of Lough Salt Mountain. Gleann is the Irish Name for a valley and An Aonaigh means the Fair. Glen was for many years very well known for the fair held there every month. It was also an important meeting of what were then major traffic routes and a place to rest and spend the night to break an arduous journey. Those days are long gone and Glen is now a quiet village on a less travelled route. History is there, however, locked in every stone of every building and fond memories persist among older residents of those times. Recently, efforts are being made to revive the tradition of the Glen Fair as a family day in June each year. The Glen Bar, a traditional pub, unchanged since those glory days but with an excellent modern restaurant attached is widely known and well worth a visit. On a good day, drive over Lough Salt, pause at the viewing point overlooking Sheephaven Bay and enjoy one of the most spectacular views in Ireland.
