Carraig Airt, an annual tidy town competition contender, (and the current holder of the title -tidiest Gaeltacht Village in Ireland ) is located where the Rosguill Peninsula projects out into the Atlantic between Sheephaven and Mulroy Bay, offering some of the most spectacular views in all of Ireland. The traditional seaside resort of Carrig Áirt is a picturesque village and the victorian architecture adds to its unique character and charm. In the sandhills between Carraig Airt and Na Dúnaibh (Downings) are prehistoric sites where Bronze Age objects have been found, and deep in the dunes there is small cluster of houses that where comsumed by the changing sandscape many years ago.
Overlooking the shore area to the rear of main street and easily accessed from the car park, is Strand Park, a beautifully landscaped public area with shrub and flower beds. Take a few minutes, walk through the park or sit on a park bench, have an ice cream and enjoy the tranquil beauty of this place. It's an ideal spot for a family picnic . Dogs are not allowed in the park. It is kept very tidy and litter bins are provided.
Overlooked by the long established Carrigart Hotel, the village has two hair salons, a supermarket, butchers, pharmacy, giftshop, post office, restaurant, two take-aways and two bars. The medical centre is just a short distance from the hotel and a little further along is a petrol station & shop. Beside the petrol station is the Dive centre with its own training pool. Traditional craft gifts and holiday souvenirs are available at Joys on the main street. There is an ATM machine inside Boyces Centra Supermarket. The horse riding centre, situated just behind the credit union on the main street, is open daily through the summer. Guided treks and lessons are available and all abilities are catered for.
